DING. The microwave in the room clicked the door open, sending a smell of fresh bread and chicken noodle soup through the small, steel room. General Juanes sighed as he inhaled, sitting at his desk and shoving some papers aside. He stood and turned to the microwave behind him, his lunch sitting inside on a plane engraved with hearts. He took it to his desk and put it down, inhaling the scent of his girlfriend's cooking once again. He sat down and opened a drawer, digging inside until he found a polished, clean, silver spoon. He shoved the drawer closed as he neared the soup, moving his spoon down to meet it.

A knock on the door interrupted him. "Who is it?" he called.

"A messenger, sir," he heard.

"Come in."

Juanes stood as the silver, gleaming door opened as a messenger ran in with a scroll in one hand. The young general stepped around his desk and asked, "A telegram?"

"Yes, although I think I will be escorting you somewhere after you read it," the messenger went as he handed the note to the general. He opened it and read.

"General Juanes, your assistance is needed on planet Ascar. You are needed to attend a meeting at two to confirm this trip. Emperor David."

The note was short and sweet, as the Emperor liked. Juanes looked up at the clock mounted on the wall. It was fifteen minutes to two, and he knew that it would take twenty to reach the meeting room.

He let out a long sigh and turned back to the inviting soup on his desk. The memory of the morning flashed in his mind, of his girl Alejandra in her pink, lacy apron handing him his lunch wrapped in a napkin. "Be careful, or it'll spill, hee!" It was always her, optimistic and a wonderful chef. Juanes hated to walk out on her on such short notice, but maybe she could leave her a note before he left. Or maybe before the meeting. Or before he left the office. Maybe he could stay.

He sighed once more, knowing she would figure it out after he didn't return for supper and gotten a telegram from the emperor. At least he could take care of his lunch and office for him - she had left her a key just in case.

"Alright, I can go," he said, turning back to the messenger. "Lead the way."

As the messenger led him out of the room, Juanes looked back at his neat office with steaming stew still on his desk. He made a mental apology to Alejandra as the turned back and started for the meeting room.
For those of you confused, Juanes and Alejandra are Spanish names. Juanes is pronounced huanes, and Alejandra is pronounced Alehandra.

The other day, I got the chance to go to a real life Renaissance Faire, one where the actors talk like English people and the food is to die for. My lunch for the day was chicken corn noodle soup, spooned inside a small loaf of bread. The bread itself was dense, with a small hole dug out for the soup to sit in. I found a place under the trees to eat (it was really rainy), slurping up my soup and eating the bread afterwords. Some of the soup had soaked into the loaf, making it tasteful and very textured. Yum-o!

I did this submission based off of the Bread Bowl Soup, and the first thing that came to mind was a young couple, the girl a cook, giving the soup to her boyfriend in the hopes that it would keep him warm for his day in the office. That idea grew into this piece. It's only a rough draft, but I think I wouldn't mind turning it into a short story with the symbolic piece being the Bread Bowl Soup. It keeps you warm inside, filling you with soup, bread, love, and warmth. It is very simple, but the things it does for you are not only healthy, but wonderful as well.

Erm, sorry about the rant. I really loved it when I tried it, so I took the inspiration from that and used it as my prompt. :) It was a fun exercise!

The story and its characters are copywrited by me. So buzz off. :XD:

Ok, finally got around to read it.

Sometimes it's hard for me to understand short stories, like really short stories, so this took me a while to read. First off, it's simple, clean, and doesn't go into hard detail. You have the general's job down, after all the job comes first and I agree to that.

After all, I like it. And next time I'll get on to the next one immediately.
