For the first time in that crazy day, Itachi thought he was making a huge mistake.
Take a breath, he told himself. Soon, it'll be done. But would it? He stood behind the forms of his dead parents, his ANBU outfit covered in blood. He stood as calmly as he could, knowing his little brother would come soon and see what he had done. And then it'll be over, Itachi thought again. I'll leave Sasuke alive and go somewhere else. And yet . . .
He fought inside himself to hold composure. Most of his clan was dead, and while he didn't like it, they had tried to rebel, and they had to be dealt with. His brother, though, could come out a hero, while he played in the darkness. It was for the best.
And yet, inside of himself, he was still rebelling at the thought of leaving Sasuke alone, of having made his clan die, of having to put all the strain on his little brother. Itachi was going to make himself the criminal for the good of all. Except it didn't feel that way anymore.
His eyes flickered up as footsteps broke his train of thought. Sasuke, he realized with a mild sort of horror. The footsteps paused outside the door, as if a record had been cut, but slowly they started to open before being shoved aside, falling closed as Sasuke ran in. "Mother, Father!" he shouted, and he gasped as he saw his parents on the floor.
No turning back, Itachi told himself as he stepped out of the shadows, his face turned away. Out of the corner of his eye, he could see Sasuke stepping back with wide eyes and a silent scream. Slowly, Itachi made himself turn to his brother.
And almost immediately, his composure froze.
Sasuke's face looked far past shock. His eyes were saucers, tears welling but not falling. His mouth was agape from disbelief as he stared at his brother across the room, looking calm and resolute. Except, inside of Itachi, he was in similar fear.
"No . . .brother, why?!" Sasuke shouted as he continued to back away. "This can't be . . .why?! Brother, what's going on?! Mother and Father . . .what happened?!"
Itachi didn't realize it, but his face had taken a similar appearance to his brother's. Everything in him froze in panic and sadness and in the fear of his brother's fate. He told himself to move, to attack, to do anything to get out of the situation. And out of the blue, without even realizing it, Itachi's welled up tears started to run down his face.
Sasuke stopped moving back, shocked at the site of Itachi his strong, cool-headed, older brother silently crying in fear? Terror? Sasuke stared back at him with no longer fear, but concern. "B-brother?" he whispered.
He fell to his knees and onto his hands, feeling the no longer silent tears slide off his face and onto the floor. His sobs started quietly until quickly, he was almost bawling. Sasuke had no choice but to stare at his normally composed brother fall to pieces, dissolving in tears until, after seemingly hours, they subsided and left Itachi sitting on the floor, staring at his dead parents.
His plan had dissolved. For the first time in a long time, Itachi felt afraid.
